COLOR ME RED YOU LITTLE BEETLE!

COLOR ME RED YOU LITTLE BEETLE!

Red pigment was historically produced in the Americas by grinding up cochineal beetles.  These beetles live on cacti (prickly pear for example) and feed on the plant’s nutrients.  The beetles are collected from the plants, dried, pulverized, and mixed with aluminum or calcium salts to make caramine dye.  This natural pigment is still used in some foods and lipstick!
