BIOLOGY - THE LOST NOTES

is a collection of biological tidbits that I sprinkled through my college classes to inspire students to appreciate the natural world.  these are not for kiddos

STARLIGHT STAR BRIGHT

STARLIGHT STAR BRIGHT

Starfish are neither fish nor stars.  Politically correct biologists have attempted to change their common name to “sea stars” to reduce this confusion.  I’m going with “starfish” … because I like it.  Starfish eat by prying their prey (oysters and other bivalves) open enough to stick one of their two stomachs into the gap and digest them.  This is annoying as heck to oyster farmers/ranchers.  Historically, the oyster farmers/ranchers would pull up the starfish and chop them into bits (Cue scary movie ax music), before throwing the parts into the water.  Too bad starfish can regenerate as long as you have an arm and part of the central disk.
