Snot is the Swiss Army knife of body fluids. Not only can it be used to trap invaders in your body, but you wouldn’t even be here if it weren’t for a good bit of snot. Semen contains snot (okay, even I’m a little grossed out by this so I’ll use “mucous”). Semen is a cocktail of fluids designed to impregnate. One of those fluids is mucous. Mucous is added to the mix of semen from the seminal vesicles. This mucous has a chemical (ascorbic acid) that helps the semen coagulate into a impregnating projectile-like blob. This mucous helps keep the sperm together for maximum delivery into the female’s reproductive tract. Fun fact, the seminal vesicles also release a prostaglandin to help the female’s reproductive tract contract and basically suck the semen on up to the egg. The bulbourethral glands add more mucous to the mix. This mucous has a chemical to neutralize any acidic urine left over in the males’ penis as the semen travels out of the body (ejaculation!).
