SNOW-ON-THE-MOUNTAIN
Ah, in early August I described a showy white plant (Euphorbia marginata) that blooms late in the season. It was curiously called "snow-on-the-mountain" and I didn't get the reference. Luckily, I saw entire fields of this plant in bloom and now the light bulb has come on. If you are a toxic (to livestock) plant that blooms late in disturbed areas, you are going to have the ability to cover the fields. This plant is wining the competition among plants quite soundly. It is hard to think of plants competing, but they do! They compete for sunlight, water, space, and soil nutrients. Many plants even use chemical warfare to keep other plants away. Walnuts are a local example! So, kudos to you snow-on-the-mountain. You are kicking roots in the fields.
