BIOLOGY - THE LOST NOTES

is a collection of biological tidbits that I sprinkled through my college classes to inspire students to appreciate the natural world.  these are not for kiddos

SPOT IT

SPOT IT

If you like green eggs and ham, you are going to love this tidbit. The spotted salamander has green eggs.  Yes, totally.  The green is from algae in the gelatinous mass surrounding the eggs.  It’s a great symbiotic relationship where the algae get carbon dioxide and nutrients from the waste of the developing salamanders. In turn, the algae give off oxygen that benefits the developing salamanders.  Talk about friends with benefits!  (Okay that was a feeble attempt at sounding more socially “with-it” than I really am.)
