A FUNNY THING I HEARD ON THE WALK BACK FROM THIRD-GRADE

A FUNNY THING I HEARD ON THE WALK BACK FROM THIRD-GRADE

Apparently when you are in third-grade you get a cabbage.  I’m uncertain why this is the chosen vegetable, but it is.  My third-grader was discussing her plan to grow the biggest cabbage, and win the cabbage growing contest, when her fourth-grade friend told her the horrors of aphids.  Aphids infested his cabbage and destroyed it.  My third-grader was not discouraged by this story of cabbage tragedy.  Instead, she declared she would find ladybugs to eat the aphids.  If she couldn’t hunt enough, she would purchase them.  She is right!  Ladybugs (a type of beetle and now “politically correctly” called “ladybird beetles”) are PREDATORS!  They eat aphids and control their populations.  You can purchase ladybugs and have a box of little predators delivered to your home.  This is called “biological control”.
