ESCARGO WHERE?!?

ESCARGO WHERE?!?

The snail used in escargot (Cronu aspersum) launches a limestone needle into its partner.  This “love dart” delivers sperm into the wound of the partner.  The sperm will then migrate to the eggs to fertilize them.  Since both partners are hermaphroditic (carrying male and female reproductive structures) this can result in injurious insemination of both partners.  Of course, there is a term for such a mechanism…. “traumatic insemination”.
