THIS YEAR I WILL BE LIKE THE DUNG BEETLE

THIS YEAR I WILL BE LIKE THE DUNG BEETLE

Each year on my birthday, I vow to do better, be better, or some other such nonsense.  Basically, I vow to get my shit together and be like the dung beetle.  Dung beetles gather dung (aka shit, poop, scat, excrement) and form it into a ball.  They have specialized back legs that help them shape the dung.  Then they do a head stand and roll the dung ball.  The dung balls are used as food for adults or females can lay their eggs in it (brood balls).  My favorite dung beetle (Duh, of course I have a favorite!) is the rainbow dung beetle (Phanaeus vindex) also known as the splendid dung beetle.  The males look like a gloriously colorful rhinoceros.  They are splendid!

Ancient Egyptians revered the dung beetle (aka scarab).  The dung beetle reminded them of their sun god that moved the sun like a giant ball of dung.  The dung beetle was also associated with rebirth because new beetles would emerge from dung (probably the brood ball right?).  And that is why I vow to be more like the dung beetle; get my shit together and get it moving in the right direction.
