BIOLOGY - THE LOST NOTES

is a collection of biological tidbits that I sprinkled through my college classes to inspire students to appreciate the natural world.  these are not for kiddos

A CHEAP SHOT AT BIRDING

A CHEAP SHOT AT BIRDING

I am not a birder.  But I have been blessed with friends who are truly gifted; able to identify a bird by a trill, or a glimpse of a bird’s rump.  Maybe someday I will strive to achieve that.  For now, I’m going with the cheap (pun intended) and easy bird identifications.  Right now, I’m getting some easy biology points by identifying hummingbirds.  This is ridiculously easy.  We only have one specie that is regularly found in the Ozarks.  It is the ruby-throated hummingbird.  The males have a ruby-red throat.  The females do not.  So, for some cheap (yes, I still am using that pun) biology points, just declare “Oh, why of course, there is the Archilochus colubris” using your best British accent.  That is what I will be doing.
